Uprising at the Saint John Correctional Centre

Saint John Correctional Centre, New Bruswick, Canada
January 9, 2010

At least 16 prisoners barricade themselves within their unit and destroy prison infrastructure, including furniture, sinks, toilets, lights, wiring and walls. Prisoner throw toilets and other heavy objects through the glass windows separating them from prison guards and staff. Guards shoot tear gas canisters into the unit while warning each other that it’s “really toxic.”

Damages are estimated at $5,000. The jail is locked down for more than 9 hours.
